The Villages We Still Have

Version 2026-10-v3

Privacy notice

When you submit a story, it is stored privately so the project owner can read it, check it for personal details, and use it for the project's research into how communities turn individual goodwill into collective strength.

What we keep

Your story, the place you chose (if any), the sharing option you selected, the date, and the version of this notice. If you give an email, it is kept only so we can help you find your story if you lose your private link, and is never published or used for marketing. We never ask for your name and never use device location.

Optional writing helper

Only if you tick the consent box and choose "Help me tell it" or "Make it shorter", the text of your story is sent to an AI service (Lovable AI) to suggest edits. Your email, reference link, location and IP address are not sent. This website does not save the request or the suggestion itself; if you approve a version, we keep both your approved text and your original words privately for the owner's review. The AI provider may retain requests for a limited time under its own policies, which we do not control.

Optional voice recording

If you choose "Speak my story" and agree, your microphone is used only after you press "Start recording", and only for up to 3 minutes. When you stop, the audio alone is sent to a transcription service (Lovable AI) to turn it into text. This website never saves or publishes recordings: the audio is held only while it is being transcribed and then discarded, including when transcription fails. The transcription service is configured not to retain audio, but we cannot independently guarantee the provider's internal handling. The text appears for you to review and correct, and is used only if you approve it.

Unlisted sharing links

Sharing is voluntary. You may choose to create a reader-facing link to your story. Anyone with that link can read your story and forward it to others, so an unlisted link is not the same as confidential access. Unlisted stories are never shown in Atlas listings, and editorial approval is still required before any Atlas publication. You can turn the link off at any time from your private management link; copies, screenshots or other reproductions that were already shared may not be recoverable. Your private management link is different: it lets anyone who has it manage your contribution, so please don't share it.

Translations of published stories

Only stories that have already been approved and published on the Atlas can be translated. When a reader asks for a translation, only the published title and text are sent to an AI service (Lovable AI); private submissions, research-only stories, emails, private links and consent records are never sent. Translations are saved so they can be reused, are clearly marked as machine translations, and are deleted automatically if the published story changes or is removed. The AI provider may retain requests for a limited time under its own policies.

Your language choice

The site language you choose is remembered only in your own browser. It is not sent to us or linked to your story.

What may be published

Nothing is published unless you allowed it and the owner approves it. Published stories never show names, and places appear only as a broad city, region, or country. The owner may lightly edit a story to remove identifying details.

Your choices

Use your private link to check your story's status or to ask for a correction or withdrawal. Online stories can be removed. Printed booklets that have already been distributed may not be recoverable.

Who can take part

Submissions are for adults aged 18 and over.
